What is AN?

 

What is AN fittings and AN hose?


AN is an abbreviation of "Army Navy", a US standard derived from World War II. AN uses a 37-degree cone, the same as JIC which is an industry standard. These can be used together but do not provide equally good seal as AN to AN for many reasons, although it works in some applications.

AN measures outer diameter of the hose in 1/16 "step where an1 in theory is 1/16" and an8 is 1/2 "and an16 is 1".

 

 

AN fittings are a collective name for the various "building blocks" that fit each other and make a line/hose assembly.
The building blocks consists of hose ends, hose and adapters to make the AN-assembly.

 

 

Hose ends

There are three different types of hose ends depending on the application.
# Hose ends
# PTFE Hose ends
# Push-on Hose ends 

 

Hose end

Hose ends for rubber core AN hose are available in three versions in size AN4-AN20 with associated hose in both steel braided and nylon braided. 

-Hose end
The classic hose end that fits on a rubber core hose to get AN thread that fits the rest of the AN system. 

-Hose end Full flow
Same as above but with bigger inside diameter. A good alternative to standard hose ends if there are many fittings in a system and you want the best flow. Full flow hose ends are often used in oil systems.

-Hose end Forged
Forged hose ends that can withstand tough environments. The body between the press sleeve and the thread is forged and has a more rigid and robust construction. Often, these are used under the car, for example, gearbox and rear diff where it is a tough environment.

Hose ends PTFE for hose that fits  plastic core is also available in three variants from AN3 to AN16 in both steel braid and nylon braid.

-Hose end PTFE
The classic PTFE hose end that fits on a plastic core hose to get AN thread that fits the rest of the AN system. 

-Hose end Full flow PTFE
Same as above but with bigger inside diameter. A good alternative to standard hose ends if there are many fittings in a system and you want the best flow. Full flow hose ends are often used in oil systems.

-Hose end Forged PTFE

Hose ends Push On avalible in size from AN4-AN12 for rubber hose, called Push On hose. 

If the fuel or liquid gets more than 70 degrees of working temperature, always lock the hose clamp with a Push On AN fitting because the hose expands a bit at higher temperatures. 

 

Hose

There are three different types of hose to match the hose ends.
# Rubber core to match the Hose ends
# Plastic core (PTFE) to match the PTFE Hose ends
# Push-on hose to match the Push-on Hose ends

 

Rubber core Hose

Steel braided hose with rubber core

The steel braided hose has a rubber core with two layers of steel braid. This makes the hose very wear resistant. 

Nylon braided hose with rubber core

The nylon braided hose has a rubber core with a layer of steel braid and an outer layer of black nylon braid. This makes the hose lighter and more flexible than a steel braided hose that has two layers of steel braid. The black nylon spun braid also gives a nice look. 

PTFE core Hose

The steel braided PTFE hose has a plastic core with two layers of steel braid. This makes the hose very wear resistant. 

Nylon braided PTFE hose

The nylon braided PTFE hose has a plastic core with a layer of steel braid and an outer layer of black nylon braid. This makes the hose lighter and more flexible than a steel braided PTFE hose that has two layers of steel braid. The black nylon spun braid also gives a nice look. 

Push-on Hose

Push On hose (Rubber hose)

The only? rubber hose that can handle all fuels - eg ethanol (E85).

This hose is also is available in AN5 to fit original barbs in cars and engines that are 8mm.

Push On hose is a flexible hose that is made to fit the push-on hose ends and an fittings, but can also be used with a hose clamp for most applications with barb.

 

Adapters

Adapters is used to connect the AN-hose with something else.
# AN-AN adapters
# AN-Other connection (this other connection could be anything from a thread to a barb)

 

AN-AN adapter

 

The AN-AN adapters are used to connect the AN-Hose assembly to other parts with AN threads such as Fuel filters, Fuel regulators, Header tanks but also to AN weld bungs that are welded to other parts to make a connection.

AN-AN adapters are sealed with O-rings and are called ORB (O-ring Boss) as there is a chamfer on the other AN Part to accept the O-ring seal.

AN-Other adapter

 

There are countless of different adapters from AN to another thread, barb, quick connection, bulkhead, tee and so on.

The main purpose is to be able to convert the thread you have on your engine, radiator or anything to AN-thread as this is a very flexible system.

An an example you would want to convert your engines M14x1,5 oil outlet and the turbo M12x1,5 oil inlet to AN. Then you can make your own AN hose between these two.
